“What’s in a Name...”

What’s in a name? That which we call a rose / By Any Other Name would smell as sweet.”  We all know this quote by William Shakespeare very well.  Yet it isn’t always that simple and sweet when it comes down to it.  Instead let us take guidance from Herbert Humphries who said, “In real life, unlike in Shakespeare, the sweetness of the rose depends upon the name it bears. Things are not only what they are. They are, in very important respects, what they seem to be.”

There is mystery and intrigue in a name, leaving one curious about why a specific nomenclature is chosen.  I get asked many questions about how I chose Capriccio HR.  The most common question being, “How do you say your Caprisssh..??”.  While it might have made more practical sense to pick something that is easy to say and spell (as I’m often told), I decided to find a name that fits the many facets of who I am and what I do.  So let me break it down.

How is Capriccio pronounced?

Breaking it down simply, Capriccio is in four syllables (Ca·pric·ci·o) and should sound like (Kuh – Pree – Chee – Oh). Click Here to listen to it sounded out.

How did you find the term Capriccio?

When I started thinking about a company name, I knew I wanted to choose some type of musical term.  I have a passion for music as my undergrad is music education and my younger years were entrenched in music one way or another.  Both my husband and my son are musicians as well.  Music is a significant aspect of who I am, and it made perfect sense to follow this track.  I went through several options trying to find a unique marker and tie it back to what I do. Once I found Capriccio, I knew I had what I needed.

What does it mean?

The brilliance of this word is that the term is used in both music (composition style) and art (paintings).  The meanings of which is a perfect fit.

“a Capriccio” and “Capriccio” in music refers to a piece that is composed with creative thematic structure and elements to create unity.  However, the piece is designed in a manner that is ultimately played in an interpretation chosen by the performer.  It also designates a direction in a musical piece, usually played improvised with a fast-paced tempo and brilliant style.

“Capriccio” in art refers to a painting or other work of art representing a fantasy or a mixture of real and imaginary features.  Landscape or architectural compositions that combine real elements such as recognizable buildings, archeological ruins or monuments often in fantastical combinations or with fictional arrangements.

How does it apply to what you Total Rewards?

Capriccio HR strives to help employers put into place Total Rewards Programs with direction and structure that allow for flexibility and innovation.  Working “inside a box” with strong walls and plenty of room for an “outside the box” approach.  Total Rewards is governed by compliance and desires structure and consistency.  Yet not everything has to be so black and white.  If the last few years have taught us anything, employers need to stay resilient and get creative in how we attract, reward and retain talent.

Simply put, Capriccio HR offers total rewards creativity within a sound framework. While it is a mouthful it say, the meaning behind it isn’t capricious (pun intended). On an unrelated note, if you researched the term Capriccio and found another definition of a mischievous or prickly nature then bonus points to you.

Cheers!
